Blackpool Table Tennis Cup Finals 2010
Gazette Cup
Carleton Table Tennis Club first team achieved six in a row as cup holders when triumphant in this year’s final against BJFF Table Tennis Club. Carleton’s team captained by Les Richmond with Martin Ireland and Ian Kitson were too strong for BJFF who were represented by Phil Smith captain, Jeremy Davies and Barry Crook. The result was a five games to one victory to Carleton. The match was a one sided affair Carleton leading 2 – 1 at the half way stage, and always in front with Les and Martin winning two each and Ian one. BJFF with Barry Crook the main threat were unable to stop the Carleton boys from winning their sixth title on the trot. Congratulations to Carleton and also to BJFF for a good final.
Hughes Cup
The division one winners Prebond C met KESC in an exciting final which Prebond C won five games to four. The Prebond team of Peter Coormiah, Chris Lumsden and Tony Morley were just too strong for Knott End who was represented by Brian Jackson, Dave Robertson and Gary Benson. Brian with an outstanding performance was unbeaten for Knott End, however, Prebond with two each from Peter and Tony and the vital ninth win by Chris piped KESC at the post. Both Dave with one win and Gary made this into a great final for the neutral but a nail biter for the two teams and their supporters, well played to both teams.
Marsden Cup
Norcross D played KESC A in a one sided affair. Knott End were on top form with Jim Ross captain William Ross and Sister Emily all contributing to a five one win. Norcross’s team of Tony Scarborough, Sam Mcdonald and JohnPayne battled hard and lost three close five setters which had those results gone their way the tie would have been much closer. However, the impressive Ross family were worthy winners Father Jim lost the only tie to Sam of Norcross. Again congratulations to KESC A on a sound performance.
Parker Cup
The Third Division final was between Fleetwood Bowling Club B represented by Trevor Dyson captain, Dave Corless and Kenny Johnson and opponents North Fylde Rotary. The tie was a thriller ending in a five four victory for Fleetwood, Trevor Dyson’s win in the penultimate game setting up Kenny Johnson to win the tie. The North Fylde Rotary team represented by Mick Foulkes, Kevin Smart and Gareth Shallcroft battled hard with Mick winning all his games Gareth won one but to no avail. Well done to both teams on a very exiting match.
Handicap Cup
This year’s final was between Carleton A from the Premier Division and BJFF B from the Second Division. In a well contested match with BJFF receiving five points start a game the tie was always a tight affair, BJFF were always struggling to keep in front and Carleton ran out winners by just 8 points overall. The BJFF B team were represented by captain Neil O Hare, Ryan Harding and Nick Valentine, Carleton A were represented by Gary Keenan captain, Phil Robinson and Ron Bennett. Ryan with some great play and steady performances from Nick and Neil kept Carleton just within reach through out the match but as the final game approached Ron Bennett held his nerve to clinch the tie for his team. Both Phil and Gary from Carleton made vital contributions to a great team effort. Well done two both teams for a very sporting final.
