Bob Wood & Brian Jackson receive Blackpool Sports Council awards

(February 21, 2010)

Blackpool Community Sports Council Sports Awards

Up against a raft of other sports in Blackpool who submitted 30 plus nominations across the board, two of the Blackpool most proactive Table Tennis volunteers have been recognised by Blackpool Community Sports Council for their outstanding involvement in Table Tennis. Both Bob Wood and Brian Jackson received their awards at a presentation at the Town Hall on Saturday 20 February 2010. Congratulations guys well deserved!

Lifetime Achievement Award – Bob Wood

Bob Wood

Bob has been coaching Table Tennis for over 50 years, for most of this time he has been an active committee member. Of Blackpool's current league players over 75% of them have been coached by Bob!

He has also been heavily involved with English Schools Table Tennis and the ETTA National Junior League.

Special Achievement Award – Brian Jackson

Brian Jackson

Brian has been involved as a volunteer in a wide variety of roles on the Blackpool and District Table Tennis League committee for many years, he currently holds the post of Chairman. But it is his involvement in the development and coaching work of Blackpool TTC that we feel deserves particular recognition.

Over the last two years Brian has organised over 12 new Junior 1 star competitions at Palatine Leisure Centre, aimed at young players just starting out on the tournament circuit, this includes: making the bookings, producing and circulating entry forms, setting up the venue, and contacting volunteers to help. On top of this, as a qualified ETTA tournament referee he runs the tournament on the day, with help from his family members, and club volunteers who willingly support the events. The feedback we have received from players and parents about the events has been very positive, comments like "these are the best run junior tournaments in the NW" reflect the efforts Brian puts in to the preparation and running of the competitions.

On top of this Brian is the Chairman of Blackpool Table Tennis Club and coaches on a regular basis at the club every Monday night. He also helps co-ordinate players, coaches and transport for our National Junior and Cadet League teams.

There are a number of other areas Brian is involved with Table Tennis, but it is both the quality and quantity of his volunteer work for the club that we feel makes Brian an exceptional volunteer.
